Creative Reuse Workshop

Saturday, March 19th, 2011

This windchime, fairly traded from Vietnam and made entirely of reclaimed metals, inspired our workshop at PCA.

Fresh Heirlooms is offering a creative reuse workshop at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts on Tuesday, March 29th from 6:30 – 9:30 PM.  Gather your friends and join us for this hands-on exploration of the creative-reuse movement.  Learn more and register online at

Join the creative reuse movement!  We’ll teach you about the history of this eco-conscious movement, and show you the various ways to use materials otherwise bound for the landfill or recycling bin. Participants will be provided with materials and instruction to create a functional or decorative sculpture, such as a wind chime or mobile. Participants are welcome to bring some of their own materials as well, such as bottle caps, lids, etc. Workshop led by the owner of Fresh Heirlooms, a local store specializing in green gifts and home decor.

Fresh Heirlooms article in Trib - Feb 2011

Above: Joseph Morrison, 44, of Mt. Lebanon, co-owner of Fresh Heirlooms, arranges a display window of the company's new New Kensington location. Morrison said repurposed items have a solid feel that people notice. "The stuff that's being dumped on curbs is old, well-made materials," he said.

Fresh Heirlooms was featured, along with several other green-minded businesses, in the Sunday edition of the Tribune Review (2/27/11).  Journalist Jodi Weigand details the ins and outs of local entrepreneurs whose mission is transforming reclaimed materials into a variety of products like greeting cards, clothing, and jewelry.  Fresh Heirlooms specializes in creatively reused home decor — our reclaimed soda bottle drinking glasses are featured above, and they will soon be available for purchase in our online store!

Fresh Heirlooms New Kensington

Our soon-to-be new home at 887 5th Avenue in New Kensington

The shades are drawn on Fresh Heirlooms’ Lawrenceville location, but the sun is shining in our new location, just 20 miles from downtown Pittsburgh.  While we won’t be open to the public until we accomplish some major rehab work on our new building (the former home of G.C. Murphy, Co.), it’s not too early to start planning your road-trip to New Kensington.  Here’s a couple of places of interest:

  • KENSINGTON COURT is a new antiques boutique located just down the street  from Fresh Heirlooms.  Though the space is a must-see in person, read this article to build your excitement.
  • Looking for fodder for you own creative-reuse projects?  Visit Habitat for Humanity’s ReStoreScour tons of donated items, from home-furnishings to construction materials.
  • House of 1000 Beers really does have over 1000 beers in stock and 30 beers on tap!  It’s also a great place to mingle with those who call New Ken home!

Check out the City of New Kensington for information about this cool and quaint city.  And if you’re interested in learning more about owning a piece of historic New Kensington yourself, contact us and we’ll tell you why and how we made New Ken the home of our business.
